Proverbs 19:17 “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD;
and that which he hath given will he pay him again.”
Many people will never experience this verse. Their hearts are not open to giving. Many are also turned off by the poor, and feel that they have not managed properly, etc. etc.
When we lend to the poor, it is often a gift from our hearts, knowing that we may never be repaid, and we really don’t mind. In our hearts it is a gift. The word lend here is extending a helping hand. Here at Calvary, it is our joy to “lend” in many altar offerings that we take. We give, expecting nothing in return.
By the next phrase, we are told that our lending is really to the LORD. Does the LORD really need to ‘borrow’ from us? Of course not. However, we do it in the spirit that when we give to the poor, we are doing it as to Him. That puts the whole spirit of giving into new perspective.
But the good news is, when we lend to the LORD, we will be re-paid. And we know from other verses in the Bible, God repays in great measure. Let us never forget that giving is the best investment we make.
